Traveling for Geeks

Travel Internet cafeFor me, traveling used to be technology-free (apart from my camera). OK, and my short-wave radio, my immersion heater so I can make tea in my room, my digital watch, my calculator … and one or two other little things. It used to be mostly technology free. Not any more!

Things got more complicated. No, that is not true! Technology progressed, and I chose to complicate my life with a few extra conveniences. The first convenience was email. True, I didn’t have to take the technology with me, but I did add a floppy disk to my back pack.

Next, I traded in my film camera for a digital one. On the outside, that may not be much of a change, but of course most travelers do turn a digital camera into a big change in the way they take photos and process the results. Who can resist emailing to your family and friends, the photos you took just an hour ago? What happens when you run out of memory? There are so many ways to store your photos when you are touring another country - be it first-world or third-world travel.

I don’t just buy in to the new technology and carry on as before. I want maximum benefit with the minimum weight, space, theft exposure, and just plain hassle. Being a true traveler to my very core, and also being a geek well beyond skin-deep, I’ve integrated the technology I used into the way I travel in what I think is a pretty good way. I evolve with the technology. Perhaps you would like to benefit from some of my knowledge?

Originally, I was going to make a single post on the subject of using technology while traveling. I started writing one, and not nearly finished, I found it getting long.

So rather than write one long article, or for that matter, write several shorter articles all at once, I have created a new category called Travel Technology.

Stay tuned for some real content about using technology when you travel!

To answer the query you raised on my blog, internet speed in bigger cities in India is now quite good with broad band connection. So checking email etc is not going to take 5 minutes per mail like the old days.

You have an interesting blog!
